Past 40 weeks

Still welcome here.

Most babies arrive within a two-week window around the due date — which means a meaningful number arrive after it. You're exactly on time.

What's typical

Roughly one in five first-time pregnancies continues past 40 weeks. Your provider will usually check in around week 41 with a non-stress test or ultrasound to make sure the baby is happy where they are. Most providers recommend induction by 41½ to 42 weeks, because risks gradually increase after that.

The emotional weight

The last days can feel long. Every message asking "any news?" lands a little heavier than the one before. A few things that help:

  • Send a group text with an explicit "we'll let you know — please don't ask" request. Most people are relieved to follow that lead.
  • Keep one small thing on the calendar each day — a walk, a coffee, a nap — so the day has a shape.
  • Rest more than you think you need. You are going to need it.

When to call your provider

Outside of routine check-ins, call right away for:

  • Noticeably reduced baby movement
  • Heavy bleeding or gushing fluid
  • Severe or persistent headache, vision changes, or swelling
  • Strong regular contractions or water breaking
